Whiskey Broker Guyana 2003 Port Mourant 17 Year – 50.2%
Stats: Independent bottling of 2003 distillate from Diamond Distillery in Guyana that ran through the storied Port Mourant double wooden pot still before aging 17 years, presumably in Europe. It is the MPM marque from a barrel that produced 199 bottles and is presented at cask strength 50.2% ABV without chill filtration or any added coloring.
Source: Sample obtained in a trade back in August 2021. I just found this unpublished review in my archive along with several others from one of my Guyana rabbit hole journeys.
Conditions: Enjoyed neat in a Glencairn over the course of two sessions.
Nose: Churro. Pepper, clove, allspice, nutmeg, walnut, damp wood. After some time resting… salted caramel, candy apple, chlorine. Freshly chopped bark.
Mouth: Extremely well integrated wood. Nice richness. Oily sweetness. Salt water taffy, soy sauce, overripe pineapple, bouillon, cardboard.
Final Thoughts: Exquisite. I have a thing for June 2003 Port Mourants having had examples at 15, 17 and 19 years old. This is the quintessential profile I adore from Port Mourant that I don’t think has been replicated in newer vintages. There’s a brightness that pairs well with the heavy wood and spice notes. It’s a perfect combination of quality distillate and barrel influence.
My Rating: 5/5
